What is HCG?
Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone that supports the
normal development of an egg in a woman's ovary, and stimulates the
release of the egg during ovulation.
HCG is used to cause ovulation and to treat infertility in women,
and to increase sperm count in men. HCG is also used in young boys
when their testicles have not dropped down into the scrotum
normally. This can be caused by a pituitary gland disorder.
HCG may also be used for other purposes not listed in this
Use in Fertility/Pregnancy：
In high doses hCG is a popular adjunct in fertility treatment. In
the pregnant female, hCG is naturally produced in great amounts -
we're talking up to 300,000 IU at any given time several weeks into
a pregnancy. The hormone causes cells in the uterine lining to
produce progesterone until the placenta grows and produces
progesterone on it's own. It is progesterone which supports a
healthy pregnancy, but levels of hCG are important as it is tied in
with the body's ability to support pregnancy from conception to
It also thickens and enriches the uterine lining (called the
endometrium) with extra blood vessels, literally optimizing the
uterine lining to be more receptive to the implantation and support
of an embryo. It is this effect on the endometrium that makes hCG
an effective adjunct in fertility treatment in women who have
difficulty conceiving. The hormone is given in quite high doses in
the treatment of infertility - up to 10,000 IU at a time.
Use in Bodybuilding/weight loss：
hCG has also been a popular weapon in the arsenal of steroid using
bodybuilders. Use of anabolic steroids causes the body to cease
production of it's own testosterone and causes shrinkage or
"atrophy" of the testes. Body builders have found that after a
cycle of steroid use, hCG stimulates the regrowth of their
atrophied testes and the subsequent return of naturally produced
testosterone. Keep in mind a normal male with healthy testes will
receive no added benefit from hCG supplementation.
